How to organize a street sale or community yard sale

Updated September 30, 2026

One yard sale gets drive-bys. Ten on the same street get crowds. Organizing a street sale is easier than it sounds — here's how.

Get the homes on board

Knock on doors or post in your street's group chat about a month ahead. Five homes is enough for a street sale; fifteen or more makes it a community sale that people will drive across town for.

Not everyone checks a group chat. Print a flyer from your organizer page — your name, your address, up to three dates to choose from and a QR code to say "I'm in" — and drop one at every door. Neighbours can walk over and check it's really you, and it's a good excuse to finally meet the people down the road.

Pick one date — and a rain date

Saturdays from 8 to 2 are the standard. Avoid weekends with big town events unless you want their traffic. Agree on a rain date at the same time so nobody has to re-ask.

One organizer, one listing

On this site one person starts the sale and sends one invitation to neighbours on the street who've signed up. Whoever says "I'm in" swaps names and emails with the organizer, and the organizer sees the list before paying anything — then books just those homes at a discount. Each home gets its own listing to fill in, and shoppers see the whole street as one stop on their route.

If neighbours chip in for their spot, that's between them and the organizer — only hand money to someone you trust.

Get the word out

  • Big signs at both ends of the street and at the nearest main road.
  • Share the street sale's link in your town's Facebook groups a few days before.
  • Ask each home to share it too — more shares, more shoppers.

On the day

Balloons or matching signs on every participating home help shoppers spot them. Agree on what happens to leftovers: a shared charity pickup on Sunday saves everyone a trip.
